What is Panchang?

Panchang (पञ्चाङ्ग) means “five limbs” in Sanskrit. It’s the traditional Hindu almanac showing five key astronomical elements that influence daily life. Used for determining auspicious timings for weddings, housewarming, business ventures, and religious ceremonies.

Five Elements of Panchang

  1. Tithi (Lunar Day)
The lunar phase calculated from new moon to full moon. 15 Tithis in Shukla Paksha (waxing) and 15 in Krishna Paksha (waning). Each Tithi has specific significance for different activities.
  2. Nakshatra (Birth Star)
One of 27 lunar mansions the moon passes through. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20′ of the zodiac and influences daily events differently.
  3. Yoga (Auspicious Period)
27 yogas formed by sun-moon combination. Certain yogas are favorable for new beginnings, while others require caution.
  4. Karana (Half-Tithi)
Half of a Tithi period. There are 11 Karanas in total, each repeating in a fixed cycle.
  5. Var (Weekday)
Each weekday is ruled by a planet: Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn).
